"If somebody asked me how to describe my art, I think I'd be stumped. It's surreal, obviously... you know, if somebody were to say that "it's representative of the psyche within the individual," well, I guess it is, because that's what artwork is. Now what exactly it's saying, I'm not sure I really want to know (laughs)…maybe I'll save that for my autobiography...
Some people have said that my work has a Freudian air to it. I think most of it is based in physiology in some way. I tend to concentrate on certain body parts - feet, hair, distorted toes...
The way I create is kind of weird, too, because a whole drawing could evolve from a hand, for instance. It just seems to grow, from a single starting point. I don't necessarily always know what I'm going to do when I start any work. It's as much a surprise to me as to anyone. I think it's from being primarily self-taught. I don't have a "method," everything just happens organically, and each project is unique. You can't do the same thing twice, it's impossible.
Why is my stuff so intricate and complex up close? I think it's because I'm so curious, and I love to look at things close up. As a kid I didn't read any fiction, but I loved to look up facts. I think I was very influenced by the images of old woodcuts I used to look at in encyclopedias. I also visualize what things would look like on the inside as well as the outside."
